How do challenges go viral?
Online Friendships
New friends
Marwan has a passion for exploring the city's different neighborhoods on his bicycle. He spends most of his afternoons and evenings outside, hopping between his friends' homes and gardens. What sets Marwan apart is his unique habit of collecting a flower (a friend) from every garden. His friends come from diverse backgrounds, with some being sports enthusiasts, while others are involved in trade or volunteer work. Despite the age gaps, Marwan connects with everyone even those who are older than him, forming strong bonds with his community.
Unfortunately, Marwan's life took a sudden turn when he suffered a severe accident that left him bedridden and unable to leave the house. With nothing else to do, he turned to his phone as a source of comfort. He spent hours scrolling through social media platforms, interacting with people online, and playing video games. The digital world became his gateway from the real world. Even though he missed the outdoors and his friends, he found solace in his online community and public social, professional, educational, and messaging platforms.
Months later, the doctor gave Marwan the green light to return to his normal life. However, he found himself struggling to leave his phone behind. His virtual life had become a significant part of his daily routine, and he was reluctant to abandon it. Despite not having met his online friends in person, Marwan had formed deep connections with them. Consequently, he never felt lonely during his time at home.
Virtual experience:
Marwan had been confined to his house for over three months, only leaving to go to the hospital. His friends noticed that he had become inactive on social media and had not interacted with anyone. When Marwan finally emerged from his house, he was surprised to learn that his friends knew all the details of his absence. They had been following his social media activity, which he had posted without them interacting with any of them. One of his friends asked him how many accounts he had, to which Marwan replied that he only had one. However, his friend claimed that he had seen Marwan posting on multiple accounts. Marwan was shocked to learn that someone had created a fake account in his name and had been using it to ask his friends for money. Worse still, his friends had sent the money, thinking that it was Marwan who had asked for it.
Information Security breaches:
In today's digital era, impersonation is one of the most common tactics used by hackers to deceive unsuspecting victims. With the rise of social media platforms like Instagram, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between a genuine friend or relative, and an imposter who has taken control of their account. These impersonators can trick people into divulging their sensitive information, such as their login credentials or authentication codes, which they can then use to scam their friends and family members for money.
In addition to impersonation, cybercriminals also use online friendship platforms to target vulnerable individuals, particularly children. By pretending to be someone they're not, these hackers can easily gain the trust of their victims and direct them into sharing their personal information or engaging in inappropriate activities. Online friendship platforms are very fertile ground for cyber-attacks aimed at obtaining money through blackmailing as well, as for this friend you have played with for months without knowing what he really looks like, and you may know nothing about his cultural background.
Children, in particular, are at risk of falling prey to these scams, as they may not be aware of the danger posed by online strangers.
To mitigate the risks associated with these threats, it is important for parents to supervise and monitor their children's online activities. They should educate their children on the importance of protecting their personal information like photos and videos, and avoiding suspicious links or messages. Parents should warn them against transferring these relationships shared while gaming to social media platforms. By taking these precautions, we can all stay safe in the digital world and prevent ourselves from becoming victims of cybercrime.
Enjoy, but keep your eyes wide open
In today's digital world, there are several collaborative learning platforms and virtual gaming environments that offer us exciting opportunities to connect with others. These platforms provide an immersive and interactive experience where we can meet new people, participate in educational communities, and enjoy gaming together. However, it is essential to remember that these virtual worlds have a darker side that can be exploited by individuals with malicious intentions.
It is important to approach virtual friendships with caution and maintain a level of skepticism until we can verify someone's true identity. Even those we know well in the real world may display different personalities and behaviors; let alone those we have never met before. Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution and awareness when entering these virtual worlds, considering that they are expanding and taking over more significant aspects of our lives.
Moderation is required, and caution and awareness are needed. While these platforms offer numerous benefits, including the ability to expand our social circle, we must not let them replace our real-life social interactions. We must remember that the friendships we form online are not always as deeply connected as those we have in real life. Genuine friendships are the ones that stand the test of time and are there for us when we need them the most. As the saying goes, "A friend in need is a friend indeed."
