What can I do for my students to be more aware of what’s fake and what’s real in the media?
Disinformation
Friends or enemies?
Our world is a magnificent tapestry of intricate details and profound depths, akin to a small village where individuals from diverse backgrounds coexist in a state of harmony and collaboration. They work together, learn from each other, and are constantly influenced by their surroundings. However, peaceful coexistence is not always guaranteed, as there might be certain bad personalities whose sole objective is to serve their self-interests. These enemies infiltrate our beautiful world with the sole purpose of undermining the happiness of others aiming to break their bonds by employing various tactics and using multiple weapons. Those who think that the virtual world is always a utopia should keep reading a little further to be aware of the lurking dangers that threaten to disrupt its peace.
A solution or a problem?
Khaled was a tech-savvy individual who relied heavily on technology for almost everything in his life. He made most of his friends through social media, and his thirst for knowledge was quenched through online resources. Even when it came to shopping, he preferred online stores over physical ones. However, despite being the best at implementing technology in his life, Khaled suffered from a rare disease that seemed incurable. After an exhaustive search, he finally found a solution to his problem which led him to travel to the Republic of Araustan, a country located in the middle of the ocean that barely appeared on the map. He had heard of the lightning berry fruit, which was rumored to have medicinal properties that could cure his disease. However, upon reaching the city, he was surprised to discover that it lacked any means of transportation. With no other option, he decided to rely on the “mapps” application on his mobile phone to reach his destination.
Scream of light
Inquiring minds have wondered, can light make a sound? Before we dive into that question, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your sharp attention paid to detail. You may have noticed that the word "mapps" was intentionally misspelled, a tactic sometimes used to engage and challenge readers. Similarly, the fictional country of Araustan and the non-existent fruit of "lightning berries" were introduced to add intrigue to the story. However, this technique can also be employed with more nefarious intentions, such as intentionally distorting the image of a product or service, manipulating people for personal causes, or implementing certain policies that can destabilize a society or country. Now, back to the original question - can light produce sound?
The advancement of technology is like a snowball rolling down a mountainside, gaining momentum and increasing in size as it progresses downwards. As it moves, it takes with it scattered snow, becoming a powerful force that destroys anything that stands in its way. However, the development of technology cannot be stopped, and we are left wondering where it will take us.
One of the most concerning aspects of technology is the use of artificial intelligence and the manipulation of videos and images. With the help of AI techniques, anyone can now appear in a recorded video speaking in the same tone of voice and style, even in different languages, which can be difficult to distinguish from real footage. This poses a significant threat, as it can be exploited to spread false information and manipulate public opinion.
To combat this issue, it is important to increase awareness and verify the authenticity of information. There are several websites and tools available that can help verify the authenticity of images and videos. However, the most effective solution is to activate one's critical mind and ask important questions. Is the source of the information reliable? Are there other sources that support this information? Is there any bias or exaggeration in the content or style? Is there a logical/causal correlation between the introduction and the result? By asking these questions, we can protect ourselves from the harmful effects of fake information and make informed decisions.
What’s next?
It is important to address the issue of spreading rumors and media disinformation, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world has witnessed in real life how disinformation can spread rapidly and cause harm. The United Nations and its partners have taken initiatives to raise awareness and reduce the spread of false information to combat this issue. They have done this by sending out news and updates from reliable sources and encouraging individuals to report any false information they come across on social media. By institutionalizing these efforts and encouraging individual reporting, we can work towards creating a more informed and truthful society.
